Hong Kong university rejects rights lawyer Johannes Chan

The University of Hong Kong has decided not to appoint a human rights lawyer to one of its senior positions, amid claims of interference from China.

Johannes Chan was rejected even though he had been recommended as pro-vice chancellor by recruitment consultants.

He was associated with last year's pro-democracy protests that brought Hong Kong's streets to a standstill.

The BBC's Juliana Liu in Hong Kong says the move has sparked fears about academic freedom in Hong Kong.

Hong Kong's mini-constitution guarantees it a high degree of autonomy from mainland China, including academic freedom and an independent judiciary.

But the university's governing council

University of Lagos

Students of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), on Monday, gave the institution’s authorities a seven-day ultimatum to replace all mattresses in the halls of residence. UNILAG’s Students Union President, Mr Abiodun Martins, made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos State. NAN reported that the students had, earlier in the day, protested against what they described as massive invasion of mosquitoes and bedbugs in their halls of residence. The students had shut the gate of the institution while the protest lasted, thereby making it impossible for workers living outside the institution to have access and resume work. According to Martins,

How male students demanded sex for voteBy Eddy UwoghirenAt the University of Benin (UNIBEN), students that live mostly in ‘dry season’ (not having enough money) have no reason contesting departmental or faculty elections. Only the moneybags on campus that have the courage to spend thousands of naira at pepper soup joints and cozy restaurants smile after the poll. Some students that contested various elections on campus told Campus Sun how they emptied their pockets at these eateries before the kingmakers on campus endorsed them. Most of the female contestants admitted they got amorous winks from guys, who desired to take them to bed

UPDATE_Three Nigerian universities for shell Eco-maraton

Last week we gave you a news on shell eco marathon. If you missed it see updates..
Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Limited (SPDC) will sponsor students of three Nigerian universities that have built cars to race at the Shell Eco-marathon, Africa (SEMA) in South Africa next month. The students of University of Lagos, University of Benin and Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, collectively known as Team Nigeria, will join 40 teams from four countries to test the energy efficiency of their cars at the Zwartkops Raceway, near Pretoria. The event will be hosted by the School of Electrical Engineering at the University of Johannesburg. The Shell Eco-marathon competition challenges students in different continents (America, Europe, Asia and Africa) to build and race energy-efficient cars, and rewards those that travel farthest with the least amount of fuel.Managing Director of SPDC and Country Chair, Shell Companies in Nigeria, Mr. Osagie Okunbor said the sponsorship of the students opened an exciting phase in the company’s long-standing support for education in Nigeria.“In addition to awarding scholarships, building schools and donating science equipment, we’re challenging the leaders of tomorrow to begin to think about, and act on the difficult energy choices facing a rapidly increasing world population,” Okunbor added. In 2014, the SPDC JV provided seed funding for the three universities and sponsored them to the European edition of the competition in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. They also participated in the maiden edition of Shell Eco-Marathon Africa which held in South Africa in 2014, with the University of Benin team winning the Best Designed Car award. SPDC organised a test drive at the Campos Mini stadium in Lagos in March 2015 to test the readiness of the students. General Manager, External Relations SPDC, Igo Weli said: “The test drive was very successful and watched by cheering parents. The outcome of the event provided the assurance that the Nigerian students will pass the rigorous technical inspection before being allowed to race at Shell Eco-marathon in Europe or Africa. We’re pleased that our support has encouraged other universities to take part in this project designed to drive the efficient use of energy.”  The SPDC JV has a long history of supporting education through scholarships and other initiatives. It has endowed professorial chairs for teaching and research in eight Nigerian universities, established two centres of excellence at the University of Benin and University of Nigeria and also provides sabbatical opportunities for Nigerian university professors and senior lecturers. In 2014, $14.8 million was invested in scholarships and other education programmes by the SPDC JV and Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company (SNEPCo).

NIGERIAN UNIVERSITIES would climb world ranking says TETFUND

Executive Secretary of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund, Prof. Suleiman Bogoro
The Executive Secretary of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund, Prof. Suleiman Bogoro, has predicted a better ranking profile for more Nigerian universities. This came as he noted that many of the institutions lagged behind in rankings because they failed to meet the accreditation requirements in infrastructure and human capacity development.ADVERTISEMENTA group, Journals Consortium, in a recent research, rated the University of Ibadan as the eighth best university in Africa and first in Nigeria.Bogoro made his view known when he unveiled some projects sponsored by the organisation at the Kogi State University, Anyigba. Some of the projects include blocks of building to serve as the Department of Anatomy in preparation for clinical studies at the institution’s School of Medicine.Others are the Anatomy complex, Administrative Block and the Entrepreneurial Skills Development Centre.According to Bogoro, now that the Federal Government intervention has improved, brighter prospects await Nigerian universities. He said, “I am excited that the rankings of Nigerian universities are coming up positively. Before now, the major challenge of the ranking of Nigerian universities had to do with their inability to meet two-third of accreditation requirements, particularly on infrastructure and human capacity development.“We have been addressing that largely through aggressive intervention in respect of infrastructure in both federal and state universities. Before I assumed office about a year ago, less than 50 per cent of higher institutions in the country were able to access TETFUND grants due to their low rating, I am glad to say that there is a reversal in that trend.“Now that there is improvement in the rankings of our universities in Africa, there should be efforts to also improve their ranking at the global level and TETFUND would continue to strive towards achieving this objective.”Kogi State Governor and Visitor to the university, Capt. Idris Wada, said TETFUND had lived up to expectations, especially in its support to public tertiary institutions.

He died last March, aged 66, about eight years after being diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease.
Sir Terry was the author of more than 70 books and is remembered by many readers for the Discworld fantasy novel series.
University of South Australia Vice Chancellor Professor David Lloyd had a close relationship with the late author and said the university was humbled by his generosity.
"Terry and I, we went back quite a while now and we had a lot of conversations about education," he said.
"I found out about [the endowment] the day after Terry's birthday, just after he passed away.
"He left a letter to his business manager Rob Wilkins and in the letter there was the instruction to create the scholarship."
The recipients will be able to research a topic related to or inspired by Sir Terry's work.
Mr Lloyd said it was the largest student scholarship of its kind in UniSA's history.
"People have been amazed because it's a big endowment for us," he said.
"Sometimes scholarships are temporary, but this one will last forever."
The scholarship will let the successful candidates spend up to a year of their Masters studying at Trinity College Dublin in Ireland.
