The need to promote and expose secondary school students to recent trends in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), has been stressed.
Executive Director of Junior Achievement Nigeria (JAN), Efua Edeh, who spoke during the 2015 “STEM Innovation Camp” organised in partnership with Oracle Academy, said the programme was aimed at keeping up with global technological trends.
She said for any country to make a headway in contemporary world, it must develop its students’ capabilities in STEM and other related subjects.
She said it was in realisation of this, that JAN provided the participants the opportunity to meet and interact with industry-based gurus, to enlighten them on the future of STEM education.
She said, “The programme serves the dual purpose of engaging students and technology company employees, while encouraging the JAN culture of volunteerism within the corporate sector. In addition, working on STEM addresses two of our three pillars, entrepreneurship and work readiness.
“JAN is working to impact the lives of one million students by 2020. Like all JAN programmes it is available for free as we work to bridge the gap in education disparities for students across Nigeria.”
She further remarked that the initiative also offered corporations like Oracle the opportunity to interact with young talents and engage brilliant Nigerians in their brand early in life.
In the course of the programme, participants drawn from different schools were given access to technological tools, resources and were made to create ideas for applications within a short deadline.
At the end of the challenge, team Apex, emerged winner with their learning process app called “Lean Pal.” Their app was adjudged the best by a panel of Oracle judges.
